Why Merino Wool

Why Merino?

Merino wool differs from regular wool primarily in the thickness of its fibers. Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, which produce finer, softer fibers compared to the coarser fibers found in traditional wool.

Key benefits of Merino wool:

  • Soft and Comfortable: Fine fibers that are soft against the skin, unlike traditional wool, which can feel itchy.
  • Breathable and Moisture-Wicking: Absorbs moisture from the skin and releases it into the air, keeping you dry and comfortable.
  • Temperature-Regulating: Keeps you warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather by adapting to your body’s temperature.
  • Odor-Resistant: Naturally resists odor buildup, making it ideal for activewear and travel.
  • Lightweight and Packable: Ideal for layering without added bulk, easy to pack and carry.
  • Durable: Strong, long-lasting fibers that hold up well over time with proper care.
  • Eco-Friendly: Biodegradable and renewable, making it a sustainable choice for clothing.
  • UV Protection: Provides a natural barrier against harmful UV rays.
  • Easy Care: Generally, minimal washing is needed. See details below in care:

Care and Washing of Merino Knits:

  • Washing: Hand wash merino knits in cool water with a mild fiber detergent. Gently squeeze the knit item to help release dirt, rinse, then squeeze out extra water. Let air dry on towel, refrain from stretching. Remove pom, if applicable, from beanie prior to washing.
  • Pick Me Up: If pilling occurs, a fabric shaver can be used, ideally after item has been washed. Pom can be lightly brushed and given a blast from a hairdryer to resume its shape.

Allergies: While most people who react to regular wool can wear merino wool without issue there are some people who will react. Woolx, Smartwool, Branwyn and Ibex are some brands that specialize in merino wool clothing, if someone can wear these without issue the Unraveled Handknits items should be fine.
